Timo Väänänen (kantele), Anna-Kaisa Liedes (vocals) and Kristiina Ilmonen (flutes, percussion and vocals) combine experimental, improvised and composed music using ancient and modern traditional instruments, alongside vocal improvisation, to create the fresh sound of the Suunta ensemble.
Suunta create authentic new music influenced by the oral traditions, textures and rhythms of runosong - a traditional form of sung poetry.
All three musicians are at the forefront of folk music both in Finland and internationally, working across traditional folk music to avant-garde expression.
From the hypnotic sound of the kantele, to dancing flutes and haunting melodies, to thundering percussion and powerful vocal improvisation, the three Finnish musicians have an infectious enthusiasm to leave you spellbound.

“The Kalevala is reinstated and reinvented for our time.” In August 2016, the four Fire in the North Sky artists spent a creative week at the inspirational Sibelius Academy’s Kallio-Kuninkala Studios just outside Helsinki in Finland. Working with studio engineer Taito Hoffrén and director Paula Crutchlow, they made a CD recording of Fire in the North Sky: Epic Tales from Finland (Saatuja Sanoja). Available from the Adverse Camber (UK) and Maanite (Finland).
